Our first friendly match of 2012 was played in a balmy 18 degrees resulting in a massive turnout for the Medics team, with plenty of subs ready to roll on and off throughout the game. We arrived at the Westwood pitches vaguely hungover and not sure what to expect of the Leamington team.
Our first tactical manoeuvre of the day was to hand over 3 of our best ladies to play for Leamington to keep the numbers even on the pitch, and Sinead, Wooding and Foster were happy to oblige. Unfortunately for Warwick the girls played fantastically for the whole game leading wave after wave of attacks into the Warwick 25.
Fortunately for the Medics we had a stellar line out, with Kev our cracking goalkeeper on top form with ninja like skills and his impenetrable wall of alternating defenders in the form of Anna, Joe, Frances, Nicole, Lauren and Charlie who managed to stop the Leamington forwards from scoring despite 3 short corners awarded against us.
Our mid-fielders and forwards kept up the pace, channelling balls along the wings and by half time, Arun our warp speed Treasurer had scored the first goal of the match! It was 1-0 to Warwick and thanks to the swarm of substitutes on the bench we fielded a fresh team for the second half. Leamington upped the pace again, but were thwarted by some tactical play by Ed, Rob, Ellie, James and Lizze our rock solid mid-fielders who managed to drive the ball into the Leamington 25 where a combo of Mike, Matt, Jamie and a semi-naked Hoops took on the Leamington goalie. It wasn't to be this time but moments later Charlie playing further up the field scored a great goal to bring the final score to 2-0.
Overall the team really played well together with some great runs and some beautiful triangles moving up the pitch. Particular mention to our debutant player for Warwick Medics; Jamie Patton, to Kev who had some great saves and to the 3 traitorous ladies, Wooding, Foster and Sinead who played for Leamington, and of course our goalscorers Arun and Charlie
Final Result: Warwick 2- Leamington 0
Man of the Match - Jamie Patton who had a great game having never played before
Dick of the Day - Sinead Collins who played too well for Leamington!! Also for injurying her own teammate (Lizzie) in the process.
