Sitting in the MTC, Thursday evening, I looked out to the approaching storm. As keen as I was to play I was less sure about the commitment of my team mates. I battled the rain to get in the car and then we were off, the rain hammering down on the road. My fellow teammates were adamant that the game would be off, but I was having none of this and rang the opp to assure them that we were on our way and most importantly ready to win.
On arrival I was glad that we all arrived safe and proud of our team’s commitment to the cause, against all the odds everyone had stepped up to the task. I eagerly ran to the pitch to warm up and was excited to see that Abi had found some freshers to play for us, God knows where she found them but that’s another story. One of them was called Alex and he studied Physics and he indeed turned out to be a Mass x Acceleration to deal with (that was shit but I don’t have the time to think of a better one - I was thinking possibly a Star Wars themed pun like the Mass x Acceleration was with him but yer whatever).
Oh yer by the way the opposition name was Rugby a team a suspicious 37 minutes by car from Banbury but I will come to that later
After a rigorous warm up we were ready to play. Debutant Scott had arrived who made us all very excited because he actually had his own goalkeeping equipment; an occurrence as rare as Progeria in Medics hockey.
We started well, launching the first attack combining everything we had learnt from our training sessions. With width and pace we tore them apart and we so very nearly scored the opener. But then they counter attacked and after two great saves scored a reverse hit shot, good enough to break the defence of even the Banbury first choice goal keeper.
We battled on, with passion and resilience. I was particularly impressed by somewhat of a hockey virgin James who was really finding his pace and ball skills. Deleclave was as swarvy as ever and give it all he’s got Josh was running after everything. And after the first initial scare the defence was as solid as compact bone; Abi was the ground substance, Tash was inorganic salts, Sarah was collagen and Fen was the structural glycoproteins We certainly had them worried.
But then out of nowhere a fracture!! Scott seemed to pass the ball to the opp.. surely not?!! In the post match interview he assured me there was no foul play involved and he was not affiliated with Rugby in any way. I’ll let you make your own decisions. We responded well scoring a quick two goals to level up the scores.
The rest of the game had many ups and downs, virgin James kept running, Homm came on at half time and gave the defence the elastin it needed; providing flexibility and mobility from the back. “Alpha”Alex was being very “positive” in his “charge” at the goal. Double agent Scott pulled off some fantastic saves and jetting Julia was giving it her all. But our lack of subs started to catch up on us and we ended up just short of victory.
We were then treated to a great tea and chose man of the match. Collectively we decided that a double agent with his own kit is better than anything we could hope for anyway so we gave Scott man of the match in the hope that he would play for us again. I was then voted as dick of the day because I was the only one who was prepared to play in the wet conditions but I stood by my position and took the dick graciously with no threats towards any freshers along the way.
