On a blustery Sunday in the outskirts of Coventry, the dedicated Warwick Medics hockey team arrived at the pitch ready to avenge the previous week’s 10-0 whitewash vs Birmingham. With everyone having recovered from the first POP night of the year, the team had benefitted from a long night of bonding.
Cut to the match, and Warwick pushed back at 1.30pm. Southampton managed to draw first blood, and scored roughly half way through the first half. Whilst Warwick looked promising when building play from the back, Southampton seemed to defend well, and counter even better. That being said, the defense worked seamlessly as a unit, seldom making a mistake and always in communication. James Macintosh had a brilliant game, intercepting many passes and possessed vision like an eagle. Ieuan, Gurdy and Harry also did an excellent job working in the middle to give the team a bit of structure, with Vicky and Katie giving the team some width.
The halftime whistle blew, and Warwick seemed a fraction frustrated with not being able to score, and so a regroup and tactical discussion was welcomed with open arms. Cameron (the only boy to get subbed off- needs to work off the pork pie belly) was replaced by Katie, although Cameron would like to point out his unreal bursts of blistering pace require some breathing time.
The game got underway again and Southampton pushed back and went on the offence. The second half played out much like the first, with Southampton getting a goal but Warwick unable to fully penetrate. Notable events from the second half was Sarah feigning an injury and diving a little too well (been watching too many Ashley Young compilation videos on YouTube), and Ieuan’s slide attempting to reach Cameron’s reverse stick cross. Hom was solid at the back and the rotating wingbacks linked up with their midfield teammates well.
Overall a really promising performance from a Warwick side who had not fielded their strongest team (where, oh where, was Richard?), and Warwick medics were unlucky not to score on a number of occasions.
